Amber Waterman, daughter of lifelong surfer Richard Waterman, is the heart and soul behind Liquid Amber and Waterman Surf Hats. As the last in the Waterman line, Amber carries forward a legacy deeply rooted in surf culture. You’ll find her chasing waves at her favourite lineups in Noosa, North Coffs, and Indonesia, where her passion for surfing inspired her to create a range of superior surf hats.
Frustrated by hats that wouldn’t stay on, stretched out, broke, or looked uninspiring, Amber began designing her own. What started as a personal project for herself and her dad evolved into a mission to craft hats that combine functionality, durability, and bold, fun prints. After years of experimentation, she perfected hats that perform as great as they look, launching an initial range of hand made Liquid Amber surf hats specifically for the female surfer.
Amber’s journey took her to Bali, where she met Mr. Wawan, a skilled small-scale family hat maker. Their partnership, built on a special relationship, thrives on collaboration and creativity. Amber visits Wawan’s family home a couple of times a year, where they refine their craft over coffee and conversations, ensuring every hat is made with care and precision.
To meet growing demand, Amber expanded production with a second supplier in China, specialising in broad-brimmed hats made from 80% recycled fabric, aligning with her commitment to sustainability. After years of persistence, she secured the trademark for her surname, Waterman Surf Company, cementing her brand’s identity. Now, Amber is teaming up with her sister to launch an exciting new range of kids’ beach hats, bringing the same passion and innovation to the next generation of wave-riders.
